During the Project introductory meeting held at Malelejwe on the 19th of October 2020, the Malelejwe Youth Council was formed through voluntary process. Twelve (nine females and three males) young people volunteered to be in the Council
On the 24th of October 2020, Malelejwe Youth Council joined the Dukwi Council for a picnic at the Crocodile Farm in Francistown. The objective of the event was for the Dukwi Council to induct the Malelejwe Youth. Nine Malelejwe members (as 3 were not available) attended. This gave the youth from both villages (Malelejwe and Dukwi) to mingle and socialize with each other. It was also a great opportunity for both sides to share and learn from each other. Most importantly, since the Malelejwe Youth Council was new, they had an opportunity to learn a lot from the Dukwi Youth Council Members who have been in the Youth Council since 2015.
ACTIVITIES DONE.
- Game Tour
The Youth had an opportunity to tour the Game farm, led by a tour guide who taught them a lot about crocodiles and tortoises. This activity helped to cheer up the young people and refresh them. It allowed them to socialize further and be at ease with each other as they moved around mingling and shooting “selfies”.
BOYS AND GIRLS CHAT
As a way of getting the young people to loosen up and freely express themselves, boys and girls chat were conducted, in an open and refreshing space, under the shades of great trees by a riverbank. Since this was the first time the two Councils met, the introductions were conducted while the boys and girls were together. COVID-19 protocols of self-distancing and wearing of masks were strictly observed.
After the introductions, boys were separated from the girls, and each group was given topics to discuss and encouraged to give their opinion on those topics honestly. Topics discussed were;
- Peer pressure
- Love and relationships
- Sex.
At the end of these discussions, a motion for debate was brought up, “Is Peer Pressure a major factor influencing the youth to indulge in unsafe sexual activities”. The young ladies were supporting the motion, while the young men were completely against it. The groups were given 5 minutes to discuss and back up their points. After discussing, each group had to choose 2 representatives to present the points.
The young ladies were so adamant with their points and strongly believed that peer pressure is a major factor influencing young people to indulge into unsafe sexual activities. Eventually, they convinced the Boys that indeed peer pressure influences young people a lot into indulging in unsafe sexual activities.
At the end of the day, the members of Malelejwe Youth Council felt that they caught the momentum. They felt that they were highly motivated and ready to spearhead the campaign and motivate other young people back home.
Making productivity enjoyable! that is what youth council at Skillshare do. As much as they leave to their plans, they always attach fun to in their activities. This is to attract young people to participate in youth activities and empower them to take control over their lives..
Thumps up to the two youth councils.
