OUR GEOGRAPHIC AREAS

The project, “Protect Them…. It’s Not Their Fault” with the goal of “closing the protection gaps for migrant (refugees, asylum seekers, undocumented and domestic) children in Botswana at all stages of the migration process.” Through the project our work extended to the North East district where many of the villages borders with Zimbabwe. As a result, there is a lot of irregular cross border movement, a lot of which poses child protection threat. A fair number of Zimbabwe minors who came into the country through irregular migration are found in these villages. As such, they are unable to access services. In the next five years, Skillshare works with the authorities to ensure that those children on the move (COM) in the villages alongside the North East villages are identified, protected and access services as enshrined in the Children’s Act. This is done through collaboration with the Social and Community Development, District Commissioner’s office, Chiefs and other local and village leadership. We strive to revive the Child Protection Committees in at least 43 villages.

Ngamiland covers a vast area in the northern part of the country. Although it is one of the tourism destinations, it has many poor communities with vast numbers of social ills. In the next five years, we will build partnerships with stakeholders in that area to replicate the services that have proved achievable in our work. An example of them is the NO MORE TEENAGE PREGNANCY campaign.

Like the Ngamiland, Kweneng West is characterized by poverty. In the next five years, we will partner with government departments, development partners and private sector to work with the communities to help them help themselves.

As a capital city, many people leave their rural homes to look for greener pastures in Gaborone. As such Gaborone has expanded and in addition the surrounding villages have equally grown. However, not many people were able to attain the pastures they came for and find that their lives have not changed and/or may be worse. During the strategic plan period, we will take advantage of the businesses in the city to develop public private partnership (PPP) with companies that have interest in the development arena. In the next five years we will:

• Increase partnership with the number of private schools

• Facilitate partnerships between private schools with government schools

• Endeavor to increase youth participation in social change activities. For example, we shall form Friends of Skillshare clubs in educational institutions in Gaborone.

• Develop projects to build capacity of young women and girls.

• Strive to build partnership with the decision makers in order to influence policy.
