The DUKWI YOUTH GOING 90, 90, 90 Campaign Project
currently being implemented and managed by Skillshare International Botswana at Dukwi refugee camp. Through commitment and volunteerism, the youth council of the organization are spearheading the project and have reached schools in villages surrounding the camp such as Nata, Sowa, Tutume and Dukwi Village. Drug and alcohol abuse, cultural norms such as polygamy, early marriage and other traditional practices are factors faced by the youth in the refugee camp which leads to the spread of HIV and AIDS.
Project Implementation
The youth had several activities to promote HIV and AIDS awareness among their peers namely boys and girl’s informal discussions, peer education Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH) and leadership workshops. The youth council also organized sex and relationship informal discussion, whereby out of school youth came together and talked about issues regarding sex and relationships. The aim of this activity was to reach out of school youth and promote the awareness of HIV and AIDS through peer discussions. The boys’ and girls’ chats were separated. A total number of 100 youths attended; 52 females and 48 males all nationalities were represented by 30 Zimbabweans, 6 Batswana, 5 Burundians, 15 Somalia and 20 DRC between the ages 17 to 29. Some of the youths came from villages near the camp such as Dukwi and Mosetse.
